Okay, real talk — nobody warns you about this part. You land in Asunción, you’re excited, you’ve got your bags, and then… how do you actually get where you’re going? Getting around Asunción isn’t complicated once you know it, but it’s also not something you can just guess your way through like you might in a bigger, more tourist-worn city. So let me save you the confusion I’ve watched so many visitors go through, because chake, some of it really does matter.
Landing at Silvio Pettirossi and Getting Into the City
Our airport, Silvio Pettirossi, sits about 45 minutes to an hour from downtown depending on traffic, and honestly, traffic here has opinions of its own. There are official airport taxis right outside arrivals — they’re regulated, the price is fair, and unless you love an adventure, this is genuinely your easiest option landing tired after a long flight. Uber also operates in Asunción and works from the airport, though pickup can be a little more informal than what you’re used to — your driver might call or message you to confirm exactly where you are. Either way works. What doesn’t work well is expecting a metered taxi system like you’d find in some other capitals — agree on the price, or confirm the meter’s running, before the car pulls away.
Taxis Around the City: My Honest Opinion
Street taxis exist, but I’ll be honest with you — as a local, I almost always call one through an app or have my hotel arrange it rather than flag one down randomly, especially at night. It’s not about danger exactly, it’s more that prices can get “creative” with tourists, and honestly, who wants that stress on vacation. If your Spanish is más o menos, that’s tranquilopa, all good — most drivers are patient, and Google Translate gets you through the rest.
Uber, and Why It’s Become Everyone’s Default
Uber has genuinely changed how people move around this city, locals included. It’s app-based, the price is fixed before you get in, and there’s no haggling, no guessing, no “creative” pricing. If you’re only going to use one option while you’re here, honestly, make it this one. It works well between neighborhoods like Villa Morra, Recoleta, and the historic center, which is where most visitors spend their time anyway.
Buses: Cheap, Chaotic, and Kind of an Experience
The public bus system covers pretty much the whole city and costs next to nothing — we’re talking a fraction of what a taxi runs. But I won’t sugarcoat it for you: it’s not designed with tourists in mind. Routes aren’t always clearly marked, schedules are more of a suggestion than a rule, and unless you’re genuinely guapo — hardworking, patient, up for figuring it out — I’d save the buses for once you’ve got a few days of orientation under your belt, not your very first outing.
Walking: When It Works, and When It Really Doesn’t
Certain neighborhoods, like the historic center and parts of Villa Morra, are genuinely walkable, and honestly some of my favorite Asunción memories happen on foot — stumbling onto a plaza, following the smell of chipa to its source. But heads up: it gets properly haku out there for a big chunk of the year, and sidewalks aren’t always in great shape, so pace yourself and don’t plan an ambitious walking day in the middle of summer.
My Honest Recommendation
If you’re staying more than a couple of days, download Uber before you land, keep a little cash for the rare taxi or bus ride, and don’t be afraid to ask your host or hotel for their honest take — most of us are happy to help you avoid a bad ride or an overpriced one.
